battery/alternater 200 89

All of a sudden, my lights on inst panel started flickering when starting the car, then car dies. Since it was late p.m. and my battery was old, put in new battery-solved the problem for 5 min. then same thing!I'm guessing now it's the alternater, but wouldn't I have been getting just the alt/battery light coming on rather than all flickering? Have had a lot of rain here in Texas and am wondering if this is some common problem w/ 240's or something w/ respect to shorting out somehow. Thanks in advance Pete
