Okay y'all--I've been a-layin' out cher in th' weeds fer quite a spell jus' watchin' an' lisnin' to all th' goin's on, but now I got me a real head-scratcher goin'! I'm workin' with m'local mechanic, but I thought I'd git some more fellers in on th' deal, too! Please take a look at this'n--
About a month ago, for no apparent reason, my car (1984 245 D24 with 290k) started NOT starting. Had things tested out, everything (batt and alt) appeared fine. Tightened up the alt belt and things seemed to be fine, then it started doing it again. Changed out the alt--no change. Tried to test out the little red wire from the alt to the instrument cluster, but since the batt symbol came on at the instrument cluster, that seemed to be okay, unless I didn't understand what this fellow was telling me to do. He really knows his stuff, but he's not around here close for me to take the car to (darn it!). My local guy said my battery was caput so I went to get another one. Three weeks (or so) later the same problem crops up.
Now it appears I have current draw when everything SHOULD be off. So far, with the help of my local Volvo guru, I have done the following: Charged up the battery and took readings--13.90 V at first, then, two days later with no driving and the negative cable disconnected, it seems to have settled at 13.01 V. Left the negative cable off the battery, shut everything off, closed doors, etc., etc. and put my test light between the cable terminal and touched it to the battery. The light lights up pretty bright. Took the big red wire off the alt--test light still lights. Took each fuse out--still lights. Took ALL the fuses out--still lights. It's been raining here for a while and I still have some tests to do, but so far, I haven't found what's draining the battery.
The alt tests (bench)have shown nothing wrong with the alternators (I have two) and nothing appears wrong with the battery. If anyone has any ideas about what to test and how, please advise. This car WAS my daily driver and the 1-ton E-350 with a 460 isn't my idea of what to run around town in. It is really fond of gasoline. This is getting serious!! Thanks a bunch y'all.
