cooling fan 900 1994

My wife has a '94 945 t car. It has the electric cooling fan. Does anyone know how to test if the sensor that turns it on is good? And also where is it? I found the fan relay, it is right behind the dr side headlight. To me it doesn't come on when it should. The gauge doesn't seem to climb but the engine does get HOT compared to my '86 745 T. I can't find a manual for the car and shops don't seem to know anything. I have toyed with putting in a sensor and control devise in the top rad. hose like I did for my '83 244 t when I put an elect fan in it. Will this work or will this interfere with the computer controlling the fan? If anyone has dealt with this problem and has a solution I would really appreciate hearing about it.

Thank you, Jim
