Steering rack 200 85

How long does the steering rack in the older mid-eighties 240's generally last? I replaced the original on my '84 at about 140K. I thought that this was a little premature, but now at 286K miles the front end is getting loose again and making all kinds of clunking sounds. If it is indeed the rack again, can I do this repair at home? Last time I paid a local independent shop about $800. Not really happy with the thought having to part with that kind of money again. I see that IPD has reman'd racks for $400. Has anyone had any experience with these? Are they OEM parts? They say "exchange", so I'm guessing that I would have to ship the old rack back? I'm assuming that they will somehow rebuild it and sell it again-if so, is there a rebuild kit on the market anywhere??
