Auto trans gone? Thanksgiving mess! 200 90

Hi all, hope everyone had a good turkey day. Mine was good, but got off to a bad start. On Wednesday, I drove from Wash DC to Boston, and about 60 miles out, I accelerated quick, and then the transmission wouldn't go out of first. I managed to limp along the breakdown lane, and picked up a stuck person, and he helped me find a decent shop. (He lived nearby).

I looked at the 700 series faq, and it suggested a stuck kickdown cable, which the shop also mentioned as a possibility.

The wierd thing is that, it would not upshift even at very high revs, which it would do normally if I was on the kickdown. And also, there is no engine braking any more. I would get up to 40+ mph, and let off the throttle, and the engine would just rev down, and the car coasted like it was in neutral. The only thing I could think to do was check the fluid level, which seemed ok.

Anyhow, I got a rental car, and drove home. I also got lost in New Jersey, I don't know how I did that, because I've done the trip several times before. All told, a 480 mile trip turned into 620 miles, and I got home 14 hours after I started.

Is my automatic transmission f(*&ed?

Thanks!

Greg
