Engaging O/D 700 1985

Hi:

I have an '85 740 Turbo w/ 5-speed that I haven't owned very long.

I have been engaging the 5th. gear (O/D) button without depressing the clutch. The trans. seems happy enough to do this. Every electric overdrive on other brands of manual shift cars works this way.

However, my Volvo manual says the clutch should be used when engaging the O/D. Is this necessary? Am I doing damage?

Thanks for any info.
