Tranmission Control 900 1991

I've got another about my 91 940SE Wagon. I new to Volvo's so I have a lot to learn. I just noticed that on later models of 940's there was 3 buttons marked W,S,E beside the gear shifter. I'm pretty sure this controls the tranmission in Economy, Sport, and one more which I can't think of. Could someone explain these functions to me. And now for the big question could I install this option in my 940SE?? I have the cut out beside the shifter for these switches but it just has a filler plate installed. Would I need some sort of module that controls the tranmission? Would it be worth it? Will it improve my gas consumption when I desire and/or improve performance when desired??

Thanks,

Joe
