Timing belt replacement 200 80 GT

Had my timing belt break on me, was wondering what the prefered method is to determine TDC when you can't use the distributor as your bench mark.

Any suggestions? Just finished installing the belt, but can tell I have something off in the timing dept, suspect it was a miscalculation of the TDC (I used a compression guage on the 1st cylinder).

Any suggestions are appreciated.
