vdo gauge repair possible?

It turns out the two smaller gauges in my GT insturment

cluster are broken. In the fuel level gauge, the needle

flops around and doesn't move if there is voltage applied

to the terminals. The coolant temp gauge is totally frozen.

Both gauges are the smaller size VDO gauges. Is there any

way to take these apart? I can get replacement guts for

these gauges but no way to remove the guts from the existing

gauge that I can see. Am I going to need to cut the back

off of these stupid things?

Another option would be to replace the fuel level and temp

gauges with fuel level + volts in one and water and oil

temp in the other, if such gauges exist. No more volvo

label on the gauge, but oh well.

Suggestions?

chris
