Shifter Bezel/Base Replacement 200 88

Greetings!

I am currently trying to replace the automatic shift bezel/base (P-R-N-D-2-1) in my '88 245....the old one cracked into several pieces. I have located a good used replacement. What is the trick? I tried removing the shifter knob with no success (it's molded onto the shift rod). I looked for some advice in my Bentley Bible but to no avail! Do I need to remove the whole shift mechanism...take that apart and slip the bezel thru it?

Regards!
