Reliability of 240 automatic transmissions 200 ALL

As some of you may know, I have been looking for a "low mileage" 240T in good condition to replace my aging, slightly beat-up 245. The majority of the cars that I have looked at have slushboxes. This is fine as far as I am concerned; I have been driving a "stick brick" for over 15 years, and now that I have a daily commute it's getting old real fast. From what I have heard, the auto is better matched to the turbo engine anyway.

My only concern is the reliability of these units (I'm assuming they are AW71 boxes). The M45/6 is virtually bullet-proof, but my limited experience with slushboxes (mostly on American cars) is that they can be very flakey and usually have a more finite lifespan. My brother had an '89 Taurus that needed a transmission overhaul at about 70K miles. The mechanic who worked on his car told him that it was typical.

Should I limit my search to 4spd/OD cars, or are the automatics on this model OK? Do they require more maintenance than the sticks? I remember from the "good old days" that you had to adjust the bands every so many thousand miles. Is this still a requirement? What is the average service life of the AW70/71?

Thanks.

Hope all is well with you and yours,

Rob
