140,000 miles.
I recently switched tags from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania. I am up against a ten day deadline to get the car inspected and have an emissions test done. I was wondering what I could possibly do to insure the car passes. I recently inherited this car from a family member, but they were not the maintenance preventive type and did not keep any records. They purchased the car used and never had an owners manual, much less a service manual. They kept no vehicle records of repairs either. The car is leaking oil at the front seals, but not burning any. It sounds like a fairly healthy engine; but don't know the compression yet. Should know today when I check the plugs.
I am waiting on Bentley manual to arrive but my deadline for the testing is today. Since I got this car I have replaced the thermostat, battery, all four tires, cleaned the throttle body (it was filthy), flame trap, and checked the fluid levels. I will check the plugs today. They look new though, from the end view. The air filter is new, the oil is clean enough, the drive belts look new. The cap and plug wires look new. The way I can tell these items are new is that they stand out on an otherwise filthy looking engine (I like'em real clean). They must have had a tune up done not too long ago.
What I do not know about and cannot test because of lack of tools is the O2 sensor?
Also, I read where the "EGR Valve" should be cleaned every 60,000 miles, but since I don't have a manual yet, I cannot seem to locate it. Even with an ALLDATA CD ROM for the 1991, 740, with a B230F, it is not easy to see exactly where this thing is (some of the ALLDATA pictures are terrible for non-mechanics). I really worry about all these new fangled sensors, as I do not yet have the tools to test them all. Even locating them is hard enough with a manual sometimes.
Any suggestions?
