Running at high RPM 700 1989

I have noticed that my 1989 740 GL is running at high RPM(about 3.5 to 5) when I drove over 60 mph, increasing as I gain speed. It seems to only happen when I don't let the car warm up before getting on the freeway. Then after about 20 min of freeway driving something seems to catch and the RPM drops to normal driving conditions. Sometimes I notice the orange arrow light turns on. Does anyone have any suggestions?
