740 GL with tire rod/link bushel(?) worn out 700 90

Hey you guys and gals.....this is my first volvo and i have had it only a few months(a cute 740 GL with great prior owner whom cared for this car also), and although a used car i really love it more than i can express here in this post.....i have been informed by local mechanics that the tire rod and link bushels/bushings(?) on front passenger side and maybe driver side are ready to bust any moment and not safe to drive on highway or drive really at all....is this sort of thing normal in wear and tear of such a 10 year old volvo model or am i just real hard on anything mechanical??? i need more info and advice on the cost on this type front end work for each side so that this pretty girl will not get completely ripped off by the mechanics!!! please, any advice is much appreciated, thanks to all
