As the other poster said, if it was a wagon, it wasn't a 242 but a 245. And if it had the quad rectangular headlights (very popular) it was pre 1986, if it had a Turbo it was from 81 to 85.

Pictures can be found on my website below of my 81 vintage 242 Turbo, so if hers looked similar but in a wagon form then it was an 1981-85 245 Turbo. Just click on the funny neon like picture on the far left to get the the picture of my car, and the one on the far right to see other Volvo's. Should help you see which ones hers could have been.

Good luck in finding a nice one, there are quite a few around. There are a few lists around of what to look for in a used 240 Turbo, search the archives of this site. Mine cost me about $3000 to buy and get running, but I think I'm a little on the high side.
