Service light does not obey my reset. 700 1989

I tried to search carefully before I posted a new question......

I have a 1989 740T wgn (love it!). My service light is on-- I gather that it pops on for a few minutes every time I start my car because it hasn't been reset in 5K miles.

Here is how I am trying to reset it: I pop out the rubber gromett on the dash, and with the ignition off, I press in the knob with a pointed object. Start my car up, and guess what...?

I have also tried the reset when the car is running, and when the key is in the "lights on, engine off" mode.

Any ideas?
