I had an '86 Volvo 240 that around 70 mph, flipped and rolled over four times. I was not hurt and naturally walked away-in fact I didn't even have a scratch. One of the witnesses said that it was the most spectacular thing that he'd ever seen. Unfortunately, the car is wrecked beyond repair (the body shop estimated it to be around $15,000 to fix). The insurance company wants to total it out. After contacting the responsible party's insurance company, they insisted that they are giving me a "fair" deal of around $1,200-$1,700 to replace the car. I checked with Kelly Blue Book and the retail value for this car is around $2,800. The insurance company said that it cannot up its value because it is looking at "market value" of the car not the "retail value" (Kelly Blue Book). The car was in perfect mechanical condition when it was involved in the accident and had no rust. In the previous six months, I had $2,500 worth of repair work done on it-because I thought that it would be a good car (and it was). So here's my question, What do I do? Is $2,800 too high or am I being taken. If I am what should I do next-I mean how do you deal with these guys? I hope that the responses cannot only help me but others with dealing with insurance companies after an unfortunate accident. Thanks in advance for the help.
(The picture on top is the condition of the car before the accident and the one on the bottom is the damage to the roof (notice the window glass isn't broken or even cracked)--what a car!!
