Ignition Lock Removal 700 1988

Hoping someone can help me before I do any major damage to my 760. Yesterday, I put the key into the ignition switch but it would not turn. I tried the usual turning of the wheel but still nothing. Following the Haynes manual I tried to take off the ignition lock mechanism but found the proecedure listed was only for the 740...nothing for the 760. The lock is on the steering column and I got the molding and switches off but don't know where to go from here. I believe that if I could turn the key to position 2 I could insert a pin into the whole in the side of the tumbler housing and the tumbler would come right out but since the key will not turn I am out of luck in that area. I called a locksmith who told me the cylinder would probably have to be drilled out for apparently over $100. Does anyone have any ideas on how I might avoid that or if it would be something I could do myself? I have several drills and bits but have never attempted something like this and do not want to do some major damage by being careless or stupid. Any help anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated. John B
