Kieth, A bad temperature sensor or temp. sensor contacts will do that sort of thing. It is so hard to take those things out that I prefer to have a new one on hand if I'm removing one to inspect it. Its common for the contacts to get oxidized or loose. That'll make it go way rich. You'll need a 3/4" deep well thats deep all the way down the inside of the socket. Other types hang up on the sensor. Thats another reason to have a new sensor on hand, so you can see if your socket will fit on it. Its located near the flame shield under the intake manifold.
