your problem definately sounds electrical rather than fuel related. I wonder if you have a faulty ignition switch, hence the cutting out, and the car not starting right off the bat.

I haven't worked on one for a volvo, but my honda had a bad switch, and when it wouldn't start, I jiggled the key around vigorously and then it would fire up. Try that next time the car dies and see what happens.

Not sure if that is the problem, but it might be worth looking into.
