I went through this last year when my old, cheapo Sears meter experienced leaking batteries. I ended up with a Wavetek 28XT: great meter, MUCH less expensive than Fluke, has a lot of good functions including temperature, and can be had for around $110. Shop around the discount electronics places in San Jose on the Web for good prices.

I am naturally inclined to try Don's "use it and lose it" approach, but I wanted something that would retain calibration and measure better than +-25%.
