Starting problems in the rain 120-130 1965

I have a 1965 122. It's been raining and the car was idling rough so I changed out the plugs and wires. Now it won't start on the first crank (positive its not the battery) and when I attempt to give it gas while starting it dies. No sputters or backfires just dies with the ALt.red light blaring. Also, I notice this light has been dimly lit while driving. Anyway,it eventually starts but runs rough until it warms up. When the engine is hot its fine. I may have gotten H2O in the gas tank (ill fitting cap). Could water in the tank cause this or a condensation problem with the plugs and distributor cap? A friend recommended putting an additive in the gas just in case. Any suggestions? Thanks, ADN
