Integrated frt wheel bearings in '89 ???? 700 1989

My '89 744 project car was exhibiting a terrible left front wheel noise that the previous owner (and I) surmised to be bearing noise. The dealer inspected it and advises that it needs an entire new LF hub assembly. He says that sometime during the '89 model year Volvo went from separate front wheel bearings to an "integrated hub" assembly for the 740's, and that while the bearings alone could have been replaced at one time, after the mid-year change, the entire hub must be replaced.

Anybody have any experience in this, and does anybody know if this is hooey or not ? This particular dealer has always (to my knowledge) been straight-up with me, but this seems a bit contradictory to the bulk of what I've seen on the Brickboard to date.

Thanks !
