Air Compressor 200 1989

My 240 was making strange noises a couple of days ago. Metal on metal sound and it was blowing the number 12 fuse. I took it down to the Volvo shop. The mechanic opened the hood and said.. hmm. Its the air compressor and the air compressor clutch. $650 to put in. My car has 105 thousand miles on it and I was wondering if this is usual for the compressor to go around this time. How long should this take for my mechanic to put in? BTW, I was told to cut the belt on the compressor by my Volvo mechanic because it started making a horrible screeching noise. I subsequently did and everyting is ok except for power steering and of course, air conditioning.

Insight would be appreciated.

Thanks
