SRS Light Reset 700 1989

I am looking for help with reading trouble codes and resetting the SRS light on my dash. The 700-900 series FAQ section (Electrical: Air Bag SRS) describes a procedure on how to do this by removing a small cover next to the cigarette lighter and grounding the circuit. My car does not have this cover. However, my fuse board (behind the ashtray) does have a "SRS test" circuit and I was hoping that this would work in place of the covered test circuit. So, I've been following the procedure described except for this substitution.

When I jumper between the SRS test connection and the grounded ring of the cigarette lighter, the SRS light goes out. When the ground is removed, the light comes back on. It does not flash to show trouble codes and I cannot get it to reset despite numerous tries. Can I follow the same procedure using the fuse board connection or is there a different procedure I should follow?
