BRAKE PADS-TOO MANY CHOICES 700 1991

In a nutshell: I need to change the front brake pads on this '91 740 (non-ABS) vehicle. Trying to be economical, I have been shopping parts stores. However, in addition to the vast range of prices for a pair of pads ($18.95-$30.09), I have been told that there are any of a number of different types possible for this make and model. If anyone can offer advice, I need to know the following: is this (the various choices) true? If so, how do I know which type of pad is correct (short of removing the wheel)? Finally, I read somewhere that an ID plate exists somewhere on the car that contains a code which (when deciphered) will reveal the truth. I think I found this but which of the many numbers is the "code". As it follows, once I know that, I suppose I need to know what it stands for. Needless to say, any assistance is appreciated.
