Am I loosing my mind - shopping Volvo vs. Mercedes ALL

I have been looking for a safe car for awhile, focusing on 940s. Yesterday I saw one for sale while it was in the shop. While the mechanic likes Volvos, he also suggested that I look at Mercedes turbo diesels (300TD?)around 1982 to 1985. He has two for his family and says that with the diesel you stay away from expensive tuneups compared to the gasoline Mercedes. A glance at the Autotrader indicates they are available for well under $8000. I kinda like the idea of driving something different, but know nothing about Mercedes. Am I nuts to think one of these wouldn't cost me an arm and a leg in upkeep compared to a volvo? Any info on these Mercedes, or links to sites with info would be appreciated.
