runs hot in traffic, tried all the obvious 200 1985

Hi there:

I have 1985 240 GL Automatic with 127,000 miles. The car spent the first 10 years of its life in Texas, then came to California where I bought it 3 years ago at 114,000 miles.

Here's the problem: About a year ago I noticed that the temp gauge started to creep up in hot weather or in traffic or going up hills. It won't get all the way to the red but it gets close. If I turn on the heater, it will bring it back down most of the way to normal. The car also makes a bit of a clakety clakety noise climbing steep hills. I never use the AC.

So first I had the thermostat replaced, then I had the radiator flushed and checked, then I had the fan clutch replaced. Nothing worked. I don't think it's the gauge (voltage regulator?) because the movement is consistent with these factors (hot days, hills, traffic). I don't think it's the head gasket either - no signs of that. So I'm clueless. The mechanics seem clueless. Otherwise it's very good car. Also just re-did the front end, got new brake calipers up front and new tires so I don' want to sell it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
