upshift indicator stays on after battery replacement

All,

I have had my 87 245dl for three weeks and did not know it had an upshift indicator. It's never lit up at all.

I replace the battery today (I now realize that the car had a bad battery when I bought it - it always cranked slow and I did not know it) and now the upshift indicator won't go out.

How does the indicator work, and anyone know why it stays on?
