Non-turbo sadness 700 90

I have read so much on here about turbo model volvos...my 740 is not a turbo. How crippled am I really? I don't want to race a lot...just an occasional stop-light 0-speed limit jaunt with a rice rocket. Where I drive, there are a lot of civics and a few preludes. What do I really need to beat these cars off the line? Am I screwed with no turbo? As it is not, the car is stock as a rock, but I plan on adding a K&N Hi-Flow soon, how much of an increase in performance can I expect from that? Is it really worth the $55? I am more interested in turning the car into a rally-esque racer...not into a road racer. Most of what I'll be doing is lighting and some graphics work. So I don't have a huge amount of money to spend on just totally tuning it out. So what do you all consider the bare-bones upgrades as far as acceleration is concerned? Help me out...I feel totally smoked without a turbo here!!
