replacing the stereo 700 91

I tried to put an aftremarket Awia cd player in my 1991 volvo 740T. The car had the standard am/fm cassette with speakers in the dash and the back doors. When I removed the stereo, I realized that I would need a wiring harness to do the job correctly, so I reconnected the stereo. After reattaching the harness, ground, amp output and antenna, the only thing that came on the stereo when I turned it on was "codE" on the tuner. Is this some kind of anti-theft device? How do I reset the stereo? Just a note: I bought the car used and have no manuals for the car.
