hum from back of car - in tank fuel pump? 200 1987

There is a constant hum from the back of my wagon that has been there for years, but recently is getting louder. It used to be there mostly when low on gas, now it is there all the time. Is that the in tank fuel pump?

The troubleshooting in Bentley's refers to listening for a hum to see if the pump is working, but sometimes the manual implies a hum is good (pump is working) and sometimes it sounds like a hum is bad. This is too loud to be good.

It has never been replaced (14 years, 156K miles). Is it obvious it is the in tank pump and it needs to be replaced or should I run thru diagnostics like measuring current draw, removing fuse to see if idle drops? There are no other symptoms, car runs fine.

Thx,

Terry Haywood
