Great idea! How often should the linseed oil coating be renewed, particularly in enclosed areas, such as rockers?

And does road grit 'n debris eventually wear away the soft oil coating on exposed surfaces? Wouldn't something more durable be preferred? Say, a dried coating of boiled linseed oil followed by a tacky coating of raw linseed oil?
