Speaking of 164 Transmission 140-160 1969-1975

Very much enjoyed the whole discussion that ensued recently about transmissions in the 164 series.

What generally emerged, if I may sumarize, is that the BW35 is crap...but the M400/M410 is now 25-30 years old and hard to find.

Are there any more "modern" Volvo transmissions that could be dropped into a 164 without massive alterations or customization of the bellhousing? I'm thinking in particular about the AW71 or the M46. Wondering if anyone has done this, and how tough the conversion was.
