upshift indicator light stays on - how does it work?

All,

The upshift indicator light in my 87 245dl with the m47 5-speed tranny stays on constantly.

I have (1) removed the fuse and driven a number of miles (250, multiple trips) and (2) unhooked and rehooked the battery and driven in each gear for a looong time trying to get it to learn.

These have not worked.

Can anyone tell me how this light works so I can troubleshoot it?

Thanks,

Jack
