Too Much Vacuum?? 700 1988

Noticed the other day that at full throttle the engine in my '88 740 (130,000 mi) cut out (not good on our interstates around here). When I got the hood open and checked, the induction hose (the one between the breather box and the throttle body) was collapsing, choking off the engine. The hose is real soft, especially when warm. My question is; Is the engine vacuum too strong? I am going to replace the hose, and the air cleaner element is almost new (bout 4000 mi)so I know it is not clogged. Could it just be an old hose not holding up to the vacuum? Also can that sudden choking mess up the computer. Car wouldn't start after running like that. Changed the coil and plug wires (needed that anyway) And now it seems to be fine.
