I've never done this on a volvo, but after a fiasco cutting through the brakelines in an Austin Mini, I remind one and all to look on BOTH sides before cutting. Good Luck, it's not such bad news as you think. a good patch will last if you treat it propperly, and I recoment the nasty undercoating stuff too. I've seen it scraped off 30 year old cars to reveal mint condition metal underneath. Unless you are showing the car (complete with mirrors underneath, I'd do it in a second.
