A local roofing company will sell pieces of sheet metal cut to order at

various gauges so that's where I'll be getting the patch material.

I may be barking up the wrong tree here, but this steel isn't galvanised is it??

If so you don't want to be welding it. The fumes given off from welding galvanised mild steel are VERY toxic. The effect is especially bad when working in an enclosed space like welding floors in the cabin of a car.
