Oil Filter Found Empty 200 1987

My 240DL wagon with 120,000 miles on it gets oil change and filter every 3,000 miles. Using Fram filter mostly. This time drained oil and unscrewed filter to find it completely empty of oil. Usually full. Engine seems OK, and oil pressure light never came on. What would cause this? Could it have been defective filter, and what else can I look for.?
