How to replace auto stick shift plastic cover? 200 1985

I dropped the "Club" the other night and it landed on the plastic stick shift cover, cracking it into several parts. I bought a used one and have not been able to figure out how to properly install it. The handle of the stick shift is too big to simply slide the new cover over it. Help! I have looked through 3 Volvo repair manuals but still have found no answers. Does the stick shift handle pull off? But what about the OD wires? Do I unbolt the stick shift lever at its base and slip the cover through the bottom of it? Baffled. Thanks for help!
