Re: Intermittent Starting Problem 700 1990

/// If the car will not turn over; check battery for defect or positive, negative cables for bad joint. You can't see the crimp joint so by pass the cables or check for voltage drop through the cable. You must take readings while the car won't crank.

Car will turn over but not crank; check the radio and wipers for operation.

If radio and wipers won't work check the system wire from the positive battery post to the distribution rail behind the battery. Same hidden joint inside the battery post clamp is probably the cause. Bypass to test.

Wipers and radio will work; move on through the connectors and be sure the electronics have power. Unplug and replug connectors to check.

Check for ignition voltage at the spark plug wires. If none move to the coil. If the flywheel pick up is bad there will be no 12 Volt pulse signal at the high (battery) side of the coil. This pulse can be detected with a vom,dvm or dwell meter.

You can of course do these checks in any order.
