I appreciate your advice. In this case the wiring failure is not very intuitive, however, as the wiper happily starts the swipe but blows the fuse on the return leg. What I am trying to figure out is what is the bit that powers the motor on the return swipe, as the short appears to be there. Are there two wires, one for clockwise swipe (here we go again...) and the other for the other clockwise? Unfortunately, I have little electrical knowledge, so the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual (apart from being piss poor tiny and smudged for the post-86 models) is rather Greek to me.
