Sway Bar Links need replaced - urethane? 700 91

I started replacing the control arm bushings on my 1991 740 wagon.

I noticed the sway bar link bushings were shot. I twisted off the links trying to loosen the nuts. I now have to replace both links. I sent away for a urethane replacement kit from alleuro.com. The kit arrived but has a 1" spacing between the top and bottom bushings. (these are straight thru links) whereas the oem links had a 2" spacing. The questions are.

Does a shorter link present any problems?

Should I have the car setting on the ground to insert these links? they don't seem to fit otherwise.

Anybody have any experience with urethane links?
