Intermittent hard-start, cranks, has gas 200 1988

Just bought this USA 240DL which has 125,000 miles. Starts hot, usually starts when cold, cold. In between, cranks forever, always eventually starts. Smells of gas, in fact, pull the plugs during non-start condition and they're wet. Timing? Dwell? FI sensor problems? Last owner changed wires, plugs (gap is OK), dist. cap. Car is at 11,000 feet; has LambdaS connected but no converter. Bit on my own down here in Bolivia. Ideas of what to look at first, and then?
