The 940 is a joy to drive. Installed a radio/cd and rear speakers I still had today, and got a good deal (50% discount, so about $60 incl tax) on original front door speakers.
I've stocked up on maintenance parts (cap, rotor, plugs, wires, air filter) which I'll put in later. probably this weekend.
Looking through the owners manuals, there's a wide range of oils that seems to be usable for the climate we've got here. Discounting the "exotics" like 5W40, the obvious choices seem to be 10W30 or 15W40. Is there any kind of consensus on which would be preferable? Main use of the car is a 50 mile commute at between 75 and 90 mph sustained. Engine has 277000 km (172000 mi) on it, maintenance history completely unknown.
The power steering works as expected, except for a loud grinding/squealing noise only at the outer limits (against or very near the stops), both stationary and moving. Any suggestions?
On maintenance history, there does seem to be some indication of past care. The car is overall clean, and the belts seem fairly new. I'll have the timing belt changed anyway to be safe, but after pulling the upper timing cover this evening I'm perfectly comfortable driving it another week until it's serviced. That belt certainly doesn't look like it has done 65K as the sticker on the cover would suggest. By the way, the parts guy at what's quickly becoming my favorite dealer advised me that while the old B2* series engines (aluminum valve cover) were indeed non-interference, the later series (black valve cover) had a different head design that was susceptible to bending valves. At least for european engines, perhaps this is different for the lower compression US engines, I'm not sure about that.
The clutch makes a bit of noise especially when declutching from standstill. Sounds like the pilot bearing is past it's prime, so when the weather improves I'll drop the gearbox and replace the pilot and throwout bearings anyway, and clutch plate / pressure plate as needed.
So allowing for some expected overdue maintenance, it seems to be a good buy. I'm expecting to have it all wrapped up for about $4000.
