when dealing with small assemblies with escape-minded springs and other tiny and irreplaceable parts, doing the disassembly/tinkering inside a transparent plastic bag saves a lot of hands-and-knees searches around the shop floor. Not only that, but in cold weather you can assure the spouse that it's OK to do it on the dining room table, because you won't get anything dirty outside the bag.
