My engine (B21a) has a rough idle. I think I know the cause of the rough idle but here is what I have done. The original manual says a rough idle can be caused by a poorly tuned engine, vacuum leak or dirty exhaust recirculation valve. The engine has been kept fairly well tuned in the past and I recently had the timing set so I don't think that is a problem. I phoned Volvo about the valve since the pipe leading to it had a rust hole in it and had been pinched of. The guy there told me that nobody in Canada ever bothered maintaining these valves and he had never heard of it causing a rough idle. So this left vacumm leak. When I stick my head down in the engine I think I can hear a leak (off and on) coming from the vicinity of the distributer vacuum. When I pull one of the hoses of the vacuum advance it makes the same noise but continuouse. When I plug the hose back on I hear the same hissing noise but sporatically, but I can't find where it is coming from. Anybody have a good method for isolating where the leak is or maybe this is a normal noise the vacuum advance unit makes? The hoses are in good shape - no cracks. Any advice appreciated.
