Re: AC compressor problem 200 1987

The bearing in the a/c clutch operates only when the compressor is not running, i.e., when the pulley is turning but the compressor is not.

Listen to when the noise is and isn't, you can tell if it's the clutch bearing easily. The eyeball test works, too. Look at it energized and not, and note when the noise occurs.

If the noise occurs when the clutch is energised, not otherwise, it's gotta be the compressor. Re-builts are available and word on the BB is that they're OK.

Topping up the refrigerant is a DIY thing only for systems not using Freon R-12. R-12 is sold only to licensed a/c whizbangs, and runs around $40 to $60 for a 12-ounce can. This thanks to the Global Warming Junk Science Freaks and the DuPont lobby.
