AW70 'slipping' 200 85

Hi,

I just got back from a trip to a mountainous area. My wagon performed very well except for one thing- when having to go up steep inclines at low speed, when stepping on the accelerator to go faster, the automatic transmission (AW70) doesn't seem to want to downshift immediately to 1st gear. As a result of this, I can hardly get the car to move. Also, on the highway, especially uphill, it takes a while to downshift after pressing the accelerator. The feeling is similar to a manual clutch 'slipping'. what could be wrong?

I have new ATF (dexron II) in the transmission, but there seems to be a slight leak at the tailshaft. The ATF is filled to the correct level always.

thanks in advance for your comments.
