Front suspension and steering rack 700 1988

Hello everyone,

I have a 1988 760 Turbo sedan and it shudders terribly under any braking conditions. The steering rack has a slight looseness (if I jerk the steering wheel side to side with the car stationary and the engine off, a clunking can be heard). Is this movement normal with these racks? I have heard that the racks in these 700 series cars (Cam gear type, I believe) have always been slightly loose, but I don't know for sure. The shudder doesn't occur at all when braking in reverse, so I believe that it is more of a suspension issue than the brake issue I had originally thought it was. The control arm bushings and the strut rod bushings are very worn, so I think that I have found the cause. How long do the control arm bushings typically last? My father owned the car before I bought it (he owned it since 120K miles, I think) and it had 193K miles on it when I bought it. He says that the car has always done this. He had replaced the strut rod bushings, ball joints, and a few other things, but never the control arm bushings. These seem to be the main cause. Anyway, any input on what is normal with these cars would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
